Jo Voss stars in the recent film 'Marilyn', which commemorates the glamorous and iconic life of fashion idol Marilyn Monroe. During filming, Jo Voss was able to explore the different styles and makeup looks of the 50s. 

"Lots of red lipstick, stylised blow-outs and polka dots are some of my favourite trends from the 1950s", Voss claims, during her interview with Damsel. "Everything on the set felt bright and surreal. My costumes were certainly more striking and fearless than any other outfits I had ever worn before."

After embracing the style of the 50s, Voss wanted to experiment with even more eras. 

She began with the 60s, an era known for mod fashion. Go-go boots, mini-skirts and hippie makeup are just a few of the indicators of the 1960s, an era known for subverting from traditional, fashion conventions and embracing modernity. 

"I think there's something we can all take from the 60s," Jo claims, "which is this sense of taking risks and moving towards a more authentic, natural identity."

After the 60s, we dance towards the 70s, with bell-bottom and flared pants, platform shoes and tie-die. 

"I love the way fashion in the 70s truly reflects disco; the bold colours and patterns take centre stage and just make you want to take the floor!" Voss exclaims.

Voss admits that the 80s became her favourite era to adapt and recreate. 

"The neon colours, scrunchies and mom jeans made me feel like I had just escaped from an American high-school- super exciting and hilarious to experiment with!" 

The 90s takes a turn with trends, as we move towards cargo pants, coloured sunglasses, baggy jeans and crop tops. 

"The 90s is so swag. That's the best word I can use to describe it. I definitely feel as though the outfits within the 90s make a defiant statement. It's as though if all the eras were friends, the 90s would be the leader that no one wants to mess with." 

After experimenting with the eras of fashion, it made Voss question the direction in which fashion is heading now. 

"There have certainly been many trends since the 2000s up until now, so it's hard to give the present day a definitive style. I would say that 2025 is heading towards a more natural style, highlighting positive features with creamy blushes and bronzers, rather than hiding behind powders and heavy eyeshadow. I believe that the purpose of makeup and clothing has changed, especially for women. We are no longer doing it for others, but for ourselves, therefore people want to wear makeup and clothes that suits their ideals and personality."
